Gavin Brown is a graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he received a Bachelor of Music (Performance) and a Master of Music (Opera Performance) as the recipient of the Donald Lionel Edgerton, the Bud Brown Memorial and the George and Margaret Henderson Scholarships. He is currently engaged with Opera Australia as a member of the chorus.
Gavin was recently seen performing as the Raoul de Chagny understudy and swing for Opera Australia’s record breaking production of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ at the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne.
2019 saw Gavin in New York performing the roles of Tamino (The Magic Flute), Basilio and Don Curzio (The Marriage of Figaro) and in a series of concerts including an operatic gala at Carnegie Hall. Other Recent credits include Turandot (Opera Australia), Aida (Opera Australia), H.M.S. Pinafore (Hayes Theatre Co), The Rape of Lucretia (Pacific Opera), Don Giovanni (Pacific Opera / Con Opera), Les mamelles de Tirésias (Con Opera), L’enfant et les Sortilèges (Con Opera) and the new Australian works Chop Chef (Blush Opera) and Love Burns (Other Theatre Co).
He has also performed in a number of musical theatre roles including: Fiyero Tigelaar (Wicked), Warner Huntington III (Legally Blonde: The Musical), Fabrizio Naccarelli (The Light in the Piazza), J Pierrepont Finch (How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying) and premiered the role of Tony Abbott in the award winning new Australian Musical The Colour Orange.
As one of Sydney's most versatile tenors, Gavin has performed with a number of internationally acclaimed composers and artists including Hans Zimmer (2017 Australian tour), Nobuo Uematsu (Distant Worlds: the Music of Final Fantasy tour) and Patti Lupone (2018 Don’t Monkey With Broadway tour). Other performances on the concert platform include the role of Candide in a staged version of Bernstein’s Candide, Martin in a staged version of Copland's The Tender Land and The Antagonist in Bernstein's Mass staged in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall.
Gavin has worked with and been mentored by some of the industry’s best including Dr Anke Höppner, Cheryl Barker AO, Dr Stephen Mould and is currently training with the world class baritone Peter Coleman-Wright AO.
TV appearances include being featured in the 2018 Carols in the Domain as a 'Young Star of Australian Opera' and in the 2019 NRL Grand Final as a backing vocalist for One Republic.
